  • Marty: "After about a year, we worked up enough courage to go to a Maranatha Music Group meeting. These meetings were where all the bands affiliated with Maranatha or Calvary would meet and share their experiences with each other in the presence of Chuck Smith. It was kind of scary. Here we were with bands like Love Song, The Way, Children Of The Day, Mustard Seed Faith, The Road Home, Karen Lafferty, Eric Nelson, all in the presence of Chuck Smith. Plus, we were the new comers and we didnít know what to expect. No one ever heard of us. Anyway, Tom Stipe asked all the new bands to come up and check in. So I went up to check in and about the same time I went up Daryl Mansfield came up to check in for his new band. We were still going by Jubal, at the time, so that was the name I was going to give. I told Daryl to go ahead and go first. I didnít want him to hear what our name was; I was embarrassed with the name Jubal. So he told Tom their name was Jubal! I looked at him with my mouth wide open and told him thatís what we were called! In a panic, He went back to his group and I went back to my group. I told the guys what just happened. After checking our list of names, we decided to go with the name Daniel Amos. I went back to Tom and told him we were called Daniel Amos and Daryl Mansfield went back and told him they were going to be Gentle Faith."
Terry: "Daniel Amos was a name that was chosen out of the Bible, the Old Testament. It's the prophets, Daniel and Amos. We were a country band at the time. We thought it would be a little different to put a couple of names together that sounded like an old country gentleman sitting out on the fence, strumming his guitar. Of course, it has caused some problems: 'Who's Daniel and who's Amos?' There's no Daniel Amos in the band." • Daniel Amos (minus Steve Baxter who didn't show up) auditions for Tom Stipe, who was in charge of the Saturday Night Music ministry at Calvary Chapel. Songs included "'Aint Gonna Fight It".
Marty: "We rehearsed every day for about a week and I don't think anyone slept.... we played 2 or 3 songs for Tom and he thought we were great! We auditioned for Tom on a Tuesday evening and he immediately booked us for that Saturday night!"
Terry: "So we went down to audition with the hopes that we might be able to play on a Thursday night at Calvary Chapel, and there was another band there that was this sort of rock band that had a whole PA system, and had roadies and the whole thing... and we were just this little acoustic band.
These guys played and Tom was very gracious with them but told them that they weren't ready to play... and then we played and he came up and said 'how would you like to play Calvary Chapel?' and we thought... ya'know this was the Carneghie Hall of Christian venues... we nearly fell off our chairs, and we said 'well, what Thursday would you like us to play?' and he said 'no, I'd like you to play Saturday night' - which blew us away.

    April 10, 1975

  • Terry has an accident with a skill saw.
Terry: "...I was at my construction job and had a skill saw... it was just a few days before we were supposed to play at Calvary Chapel and it was at the end of the day... and the skill saw kicked back and took my thumb off and part of a finger. So, I played Saturday night with bandages... with these huge bandages on my hand. Which was cool with most people because they thought it was some sort of a slide guitar device..."

  • Daniel Amos performs at Calvary Chapel.
Kenny Paxton: "I will never forget when Terry, Steve, Jerry and Marty played Calvary Chapel for the first time. It was the first time they had someone play on such short notice, sandwiched in between the main performers. There was no drummer, Marty stood and the other three all sat on stools. The crowd of several thousand went nuts. It was truly awesome."

  • Marty: "We were the first Christian Band at Calvary Chapel to receive a standing ovation."
