I teach a class of about 20 high school students every Wednesday night. It was "National Pretzel Day" so I gave everyone pretzel and told them how We twist our on lives an wear "masks." I talked to them from The Message using 2 Corinthians 4:1-3:
"1Since God has so generously let us in on what he is doing, we're not about to throw up our hands and walk off the job just because we run into occasional hard times. 2We refuse to wear masks and play games. We don't maneuver and manipulate behind the scenes. And we don't twist God's Word to suit ourselves. Rather, we keep everything we do and say out in the open, the whole truth on display, so that those who want to can see and judge for themselves in the presence of God.
3If our Message is obscure to anyone, it's not because we're holding back in any way. No, it's because these other people are looking or going the wrong way and refuse to give it serious attention.
I closed by playing the SE's "The Twist." I asked them not to twist their lives by wearing masks and not to leave him twisting in the wind. They responded very well. Then, several of them came to me and asked me where they could get that cd! It was a cool experience.

I used that song in class a couple of weeks ago, the students responded very well to it as well, though they are only grade 7 and 8, after they figured out the "weird lyrics"

That's VERY nifty, Canine!
A good object lesson, too, with the pretzel and all.
Did you all DO the "twist" to the music, too???
heh heh

Thank JC and all of you. It was a cool experience. I have used that song before, but it was exciting to see the lesson take root in their lives and for them to enjoy the song.

Thanks for sharing k9. Being a homeschool teacher, I collect object lessons and since we really like that song (and listen to it often), my kids are familiar with the wierd lyrics. Now we can talk about those wierd lyrics and apply them to our lives.

It seemed really appropriate for Easter a couple of weeks ago. One of the greatest Easter hymns around.
