don't remember which song, but one has what now sounds like a distant car alarm going off (heard tonight in walmart parking lot). this was a MP3 converted from a cassette computer recording using audacity. it took years for me to enjoy the bulk of this one, but gonna get the reissue now.

It's all about perspective. Vinyl on a decent turntable DOES sound better than low bitrate digital AAC/MP3 that those of a certain age range mostly listened to on iPods (to get more songs with limited memory) or perhaps mobile (non-WiFi) streaming (to save data and/or be playable without stop/start buffering).
Hope that makes sense

Yes, Mike played bass and did a pretty good job. Great show in Kannapolis, NC! Wish Dan coulda been there too. Full house! After Weather Girl, Derri said "i'm exhausted"
good mix of tunes, mike, kerosene halo, derri solo, choir past and present. really liking some of the new tunes too.

Another note- I may have posted this before- my turntable is a silver linear-tracking front-loading Radio Shack one I bought around 1985. It worked well the last time I used it (a year or two ago). But I may have noted here when I played "Dig Here..." it was too slow. My theory is that I never before tried to spin a piece of heavyweight vinyl on it , thus I never noticed the defect. I'll need to get a better one. |
Some time back, when I got an original HD LP off eBay and converted to MP3 via turntable and computer, my first attempt sounded slow. I would suggest reading up a bit on your turntable and maybe a drop of a light oil on the motor shaft bushings would get it spinning right again
and there are places mostly online now that sell rubber belts if you need that too.

I wonder if the choir will have an honorary empty chair on their upcoming tour? didn't look into details; just assuming derri and mike were both playing guitar. but while certainly nothing like tim, derri did play respectable bass on some dogs tours...

wow. what can one say. i saw it in an email and kinda hoped to get on here and find out it wasn't really true.
got to meet him before briefly. big guy. funny guy. big heart was how he came across. great bass player.
i remember when i borrowed a the who DVD from the library and saw john entwistle playing and thought he was pretty good and sounded almost as good as tim.
at least i realized it sooner than i realized gene was gone. life is kinda crazy at times.

Thread: Terry Taylor's Guild JF30 Jumbo Acoustic Guitar w/case - personalized to winner! |
|
Good Question where it is now. He did got rid of the black acoustic from MBD too IIRC, just don't remember exactly how.
I saw him use the Guild Jumbo live a number of times over the years. I understand not wanting or needing to keep everything. A guitar is a tool of sorts after all. There is so much that goes into how it feels, sounds, and looks as an artist and performer. Needs and preferences can change over time.

Vox is probably my least favorite album. Of course I was never much into new wave and had a serious aversion to keyboards for a long time, so that explains a lot. I suppose getting older and more nostalgic, liking old movies and old science fiction somewhat makes more connections with this one for me now than in the past.
I don't understand why so many still would say it is their best record, though. To me, it was telling Terry chose to redo Songs of the Heart first.
At any rate, select Vox tracks have been rotating on repeat the last week or so and i've really been enjoying the ones I like, such as:
Rocket Packs
Home Permanent (like the contrast of guitar and keyboards). And I finally got the "Home Permanent" part in regards to hair. complete doh on me
!
When Worlds Collide - I really like this version, but Terry's solo acoustic version grabbed me first. How simple and beautiful.
Sanctuary - originally my favorite track, now I'm not so sure
Rocket Packs and Home Permanent are so fun and catchy, and also contrast with the deeper When Worlds Collide and Sanctuary
At this point I don't remember if my MP3s came from my Audacity conversion of cassette I know I bought (most likely), somebody sent me files, or I later got a CD. I am going to have to get the reissue and hope the guitar stands out more in the mix.

I must admit I was a little underwhelmed when this first came out. It sounded at first sonically like a continuation of the Swirling Eddies Midget album, but more DA lyrically. But then my favorites on the average are more rocking ones. And I had a LOT going on at the time.
The last time it came up recently on rotation in the car on the USB I put it on repeat a bit and really enjoyed it. Hard to pick a favorite, there are so many good ones.
