Greetings from Cornerstone, Day 2.
Today saw the first real day of activity at the W&F merch booth. All of
the expected releases (Taylor, Roe, DA and 77's) arrived on time and in
good shape. Eric and Jason Townsend, myself and Dan and Lisa Michaels
spent the better part of the day behind the merch counter. Hot work,
but we got to see a bunch more of the annual fans and the listserv
family.
Michael Roe, Mark Harmon, Ed McTaggert, Tom Strahle, Derri Daugherty,
Steve Hindalong, Marc Byrd and Tim Chandler all arrived today. Also,
Steve and Veronica Johnson and Theo Obrastoff made their CStone
appearance. We are all staying at the same hotel, and most of us on the
same floor, so it really does feel like a family reunion of sorts. Most
of us got together today and the spirits of all are running high.
We had the usual hotel/accommodation screw ups and I spent the better
part of my late evening sorting out room assignments, etc. Every year,
no matter how hard we try, the hotel manages to mess up the
accommodations.
Again, the day was spent in rehearsals for the Lost Dogs (Hindalong is
playing drums for them this year) and Daniel Amos (bringing Tom Strahle
up to speed). The 77's will not rehearse at the fest as they have had
many good pre-CStone rehearsals. Mark share the set list with me
tonight -- 3 separate parts to the show; (1) The loud, rock-n-roll
introduction; (2) the new material and the acoustic songs; and (3) the
long jam into a 30 minute medley of the old favorites. They have a 90
minute set.
I heard DA rehearsing "Youth With a Machine," but nothing else. The
Dogs sound good and loose, like usual.
Later today (Thursday) will see acoustic sets by Roe, Taylor and the
Dogs, as well as the full DA set at the Cornerstone stage. A big day
ahead of us all.
The dust is choking, the heat almost unbearable and the crowd nearing
20,000. No rain is forecasted anytime soon, it will only get hotter,
and by the weekend there will be near 40,000 in attendance. As Terry
said tonight, "That's a lot of DA fans. What's the fest going to do
once we're done and they all leave?"
I'll give you the skinny on the sets tomorrow morning.

I'm off to the snow with 3 other leaders and 14 youth for a long weekend of preaching teaching and fun.
Can someone else post the the board the other reports from JT.
That is of course if the board actually want to read them and I'm not wasting time here. 
)

I didn't even read it because it will only get me upset that I'm not there, but here it is....

A bit late this morning...but I stayed up until 3:00 am, so I'm a bit
tired. Anyway...
Yesterday we had a FULL day of great shows. Terry and Rob Watson played
the acoustic stage and wowed us all with the great new material from
LITTLE, big. The set was well attended and the songs were well
received. Shortly thereafter, Michael Roe and Mark Harmon (strapped
with an acoustic guitar and sporting a do-rag) took the stage and did
songs from Roe's new solo album "What Holds On," "Say Your Prayers,"
"Sunshine Down"), new 77's material ("Lifeline") and a few recent
classics such as "Genuine." Again, the crowd response was great. The
last show of the day for the acoustic stage was the Lost Dogs -- the
crowd had swelled to the largest of the day. The guys did songs from
Scenic Routes ("Bullet Train"), Real Men Cry ("A Certain Love"), and
Gift Horse ("A Vegas Story"). Everyone loved it and the Dogs' live
schtick was alive and kicking. Derri is the brunt of the jokes, Mike is
the clown and Terry the straight man.
The DA set was incredible -- would have, for the most part, easily fit
on the Vox Humana Tour. Chandler on bass was simply incredible and
Terry's vocal performance was the best I heard in years. The set list
included:

And about 6 more that I can't remember right now. What a set. What a
crowd. The back stage "guest list" included Steve Hindalong, Derri
Daugherty, Jimmy A, Dan Michaels, Mark Harmon, and other local
dignitaries. A great night.
We continue to meet many of the listserv family and the annual CStone
fans.
Today is 77's day. The dust is still unbearable, the heat miserable and
the festival packed. Yesterday, the fest surpassed the number of
attendees from last year -- and we still have the 2 big weekend days
yet! There will most likely be 35,000 plus this year.

Greetings, again, from the dustbowl of the Mid-West!
Tonight I'm writing while Theo and Brian Heydn are here in my room -- a
great get together. We've given Terry and Mike and the gang a rest for
the night.
As Terry had no real festival obligations today, he stayed at the hotel
and rested. I think perhaps he had dinner with Theo to talk over the
Come As a Child recording. Regardless, he's made himself scarce and he
certainly deserves a break after 3 gigs yesterday. He's got a press
conference, a Dogs' gig and a short set with Theo tomorrow. The guy
needs to take a break.
So, then, what did happen today with whom? Well...Mike and Mark spent
the better part of the afternoon at the W&F merch booth, signing
autographs, greeting the fans and just making the whole endeavor a bit
more fun. Brian Heydn and Mark spent a good amount of time talking
about restructuring the 77's website.
As usual, most of the day was spent behind the merch tables. Brian and
Beth Heydn have been invaluable with regard to the help they have given
me. Same with the Townsends. All are appreciated. Jason and Eric
spent the better part of the day recording the Choir, 77's and other
sets to wide angle film for use on a few DVD projects we have up our
sleeves.
The 77's were the show of the day! 9:00 on the Gallery Stage (the same
stage they have played for years). As usual, the crowd swelled well
beyond the tent...in to the next tent...in to the volleyball courts...in
to the dustry streets. The set?!? Incredible. One of the finest
performances I've seen yet. As I mentioned before, the set had 3
distinct parts -- rock-n-roll start, intimate middle, and jam session
end. The last portion of the show featured an almost 30 minute guitar
lead solo by Roe -- moving through snippets and instrumentals of "Indian
Winter," "Rocks in Your Head," "You Still Love Me," "Little Wing," an
Orbis instrumental and perhaps a few others. Simply incredible -- a jam
beyond belief.

No encore. Time did not permit as the 77's were well over their 90
minute set. The crowd went crazy -- dancing in the streets and in the
front few rows.
Theo, who you will recall was at dinner with Terry, missed the set.
Brian and I have given him a verbal wedgy for the last two hours. Mike
Roe, Mark Harmon and Bruce Spencer were simply out of their heads.
Tomorrow (or later today) will see Theo's set with Terry and the Lost
Dogs electric set. Then we head home. Hard to believe there is just
one day left. I love this fest. I really encourage you to come next
year -- we won't disappoint.
