When Everyone Wore Hats Review Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

Here's my review of the new "When Everyone Wore Hats" book set. First I will get my one complaint out of the way. The packaging in no way approaches what was done with the "Alarma Chronicles Book Set", not that this is a surprise to anyone that has been following the saga of this release. I remember being warned quite some time ago that things would have to be different with this release due to bugetary constraints. My biggest problem with the softcover book is that by the time it arrived in the mail there were permanant "circle marks" on the front and back covers showing the outline of the discs underneath. Now that I've got that out of the way onto the positive. This is a great release! I'm sure most of the readers here already have the original "Songs Of The Heart", and even if it wasn't your favorite DA album (I know there were mixed reactions to this album when it was released) you still owe it to yourself to buy the book set. Reading the stories behind the songs brings a whole new meaning to the project. I don't ever recall Terry Taylor going into this much detail in the past as to what his songs actually mean. The new acoustic versions of the songs on disc two are very well done (these are worlds better than the poor sounding demos from the first Avocado Club disc, hopefully those will be remastered and rereleased someday) and lend a totally different feel to the original versions of these songs. While coming in at only a little over 20 minutes, disc 3 has some nice stuff on it as well. Terry's abbreviated reading of the story of Bud & Irma Akendorf is interspersed with 3 more songs. At the end of this disc is an interview with Terry Taylor. So is it worth the $35 bucks? I guess that's going to differ for everyone, but I would highly recommend this release to any DA fan.

I picked up the bookset from the local bookstore... I got it on sale for 30 bucks... that is a real nice set.
so WEWH is "paperback" eh? that seems kinda strange.

I think it sounds like something well worth getting though Pleased

The WEWH book is softcover, but the reason the Alarma
Chronicles is hard cover is because it's the Alarma Chronicles.. and everyone wanted to go all out on that
project. Nobody knew if that would ever be done anywhere
close to the same ever again, so it had to be done Hardcover
with color photos, as much information as possible, etc.
We just can't go to that level on everything.

The Avacodo Club disc was taken directly from Terry's
DAT, and was meant to be exactly what it was. We could
have had it mastered, but it was intended to be exactly
the way Terry played those songs on his recorder.
A glimps into what Terry hears as he is working.
And if you're going to have something mastered correctly
it costs more than what we could put into that project
anyway, like what we spent mastering "Buechners Dream."

I hope the things I said about the WEWH book and the Avocado club CD in my original post weren't construed and negative complaints. As I mentioned, I totally understand the decison to make WEWH a softcover and I am thrilled with it (circle marks on the covers and all). It was well worth the money. I should have also mentioned that WEWH really does out do the Alarma Chronicles book in many ways. I was always a bit bothered that the 4 Alarma Chronicles albums were put onto 3 CD's. It makes it a bit inconvenient to listen to. It also doesn't sound like any of the music was remastered, I could certainly be wrong about this, but they sound like the original CD's (and vinyl). Again, I'm nit-picking and that's all. It was by far the best thing that M8 ever put out (are they still around?). So, I hope I didn't step on any toes with my earlier comments. People like the Audiori boys and JT Feavel are doing a fantastic job keeping things going with some of my favorite bands and words can't really express my appreciation for that. Maybe I should keep my nit-picking to myself.

Not by us... we just wanted to give a little explanation about those two issues in case anyone was unaware as to why those decisions were made.

I can't wait for all this stuff to be re-issued properly. That'll put those folks who sell stuff for 100 bucks on e-bay out of business. I'm sure they have day jobs though... Wink

I think people are getting away from actually reviewing the album, but oh well. I've been listening to WEWH more and more and it's growing on me. I find myself wanting to listen to disc 2 more than disc 1. The slight quirkiness of disc 2 doesn't bother me as much as it did the first few listens, and the music is just growing on me. And I've said before that I most like that I can actually understand the lyrics. It's a whole new listen to the original Songs of the Heart (which I think was the original purpose.)

But then you also have to have someone try to change the thread back to the original topic. Big Grin

I'm think I'm really going to like both disk 2 and 3. I've been listening to SOTH while waiting for them to arrive.

Every day I go home for lunch and it's not there *sigh*

So what in total am I waiting on...

When Everyone Wore Hats
Little, Big
Mr Beuchners Dream t shirt
When Everyone Wore Hats t shirt
Orbis
that funky crow thing
Later
a 77s poster
Making God Smile
Paste sampler 1
Aliens and strangers - silent planet sampler
Avocado club disk 2

Of course not all have been sent (or made!) yet and most are due this week. Boy... is the trip to the youth group snow camp going to be interesting this weekend if they do get here.

The funky crow thing is worth the wait.... trust me.... as for the rest....

So what in total am I waiting on...

When Everyone Wore Hats -- ain't gonna pay it. Sorry. Just ain't.

Little, Big -- need birthday money. Send birthday money.

Mr Beuchners Dream t shirt -- heck, aren't we ALL?

When Everyone Wore Hats t shirt -- see also WEWH

Orbis -- Got it. Funky. Not in the same way as...

that funky crow thing -- though, but funky....

Later -- need birthday money. Send birthday money.

a 77s poster -- cheap idolatrous slut.

Making God Smile --- need birthday money. Send birthday money. Before it goes to one disk. Otherwise I'll probably pass.

Paste sampler 1 -- lame. But cheap.

Aliens and strangers - silent planet sampler -- didn't know about this one. Need birthday money. Send birthday money.

Avocado club disk 2 -- waiting too....

Hey! No mention of Bill Mallonee's Fetal Position? If y'r a VoL fan, you want it. If y'r not (or if, like me, you find Slow Dark Train to be a Zoom Daddy-like desert island disk and find the rest of his stuff only moderately interesting), heck, he still needs the money....

So I'm a cheap idolatrous slut am I? :p Well I might be but I'm one with a poster...

The paste sampler 1 was free if you buy two things from paste, so I got Makeing God Smile and the silent planet sampler which was also cheap - tee hee hee.

I have only heard one VOL song and that's the one on the Mark Heard tribute so once the birthday money arrives for me maybe then I'll get it. And also the Eddies DVD - but that will be after I get the DVD player.

Oh yeah - In regards to your birthday money - the check is in the male. (just don't ask which male...)

Well, it's been a while since I've been on here but I visit once in a while time permitting.

I received my WEWH, and was well, totally underwhelmed. I liked the original well enough, and WEWH is really an amazing song.

The story itself is, well, okay. Terry is a wonderful songwriter - but as a short story writer the piece felt somewhat flat, and in need of editing for continuity. Starting right at the beginning. You don't get a Purple heart and then a bad leg. You get a bad leg, and then the Purple Heart.

Still it is a nice counterpoint to the songs, and works as a companion piece.

The new renditions are pretty good, and it was nice to hear a loose interpritation of the familiar. Like others I liked the vocal intimacy. Speaking of vocals, I never had any problem with the original - I don't know why he got so much grief over it the first time around.

Finally the 3rd disc - considering the length of the story, it's too bad Terry didn't read the whole thing. Oh well.

It's a nice looking package - despite the fact it doesn't look like it'll last very long, and will cater to the longtime faithful. I'm not sorry I bought it, despite what may come across as Terry bashing. I'm not bashing Terry!

JtT
