Hmmmmmm. God can use anything but I have a hard time seeing the bright side of putting Jesus on a plastic top and selling it for $3.00 or a hat and selling it for $25.00

DORF-
You have strongly stated your opinion, and I respect that (and agree in portion).

Its been said- but I really dont think in the case of Mel- he was trying to "save" anyone by making the film- except perhaps his inner self.

From what I have heard him say - he just felt compelled to make it- and when no one stepped up to the plate in the movie industry to back him- he said- well, I'll make it anyway.

As far as the wide popularity of the film, it falls in the catagory of every other- a directors vison being excepted or rejected- happens in everyones artistic field-not just this one.

You dont make sediment to make money- but what if a big time producer called and said he wanted 10, 000 copies. would you be pimping anything at that point?

hey- it could happen!- and monkeys may fly out of your butt!
buahhahahahahahahahahah.....!

That's the nice thing of it all.......you don't have to see it Smile Leave all of that in His hands and worry about what matters most...yourself Smile because when you worry about your own realtionship with Him, he begins to use you to bless others. Like carl said ministry just happen. And if you believe what The Word says, He wins in the end anyway, so those making a buck at his expense WILL be dealt with. Wink

Love You Bro.

Breathe Deep (The Breath of God)
from the album "Scenic Routes"
(Music and lyrics by Terry Taylor)
Politicians, morticians, Philistines, homophobes
Skinheads, Dead heads, tax evaders, street kids
Alcoholics, workaholics, wise guys, dim wits
Blue collars, white collars, war mongers, peace nicks

Chorus
Breathe deep
Breathe deep the Breath of God
Breathe deep
Breathe deep the Breath of God

Suicidals, rock idols, shut-ins, drop outs
Friendless, homeless, penniless and depressed
Presidents, residents, foreigners and aliens
Dissidents, feminists, xenophobes and chauvinists

Chorus

Evolutionists, creationists, perverts, slum lords
Dead-beats, athletes, Protestants and Catholics
Housewives, neophytes, pro-choice, pro-life
Misogynists, monogamists, philanthropists, blacks and whites

Chorus

Police, obese, lawyers, and government
Sex offenders, tax collectors, war vets, rejects
Atheists, Scientists, racists, sadists
Biographers, photographers, artists, pornographers

Chorus

Gays and lesbians, demagogues and thesbians
The disabled, preachers, doctors and teachers
Meat eaters, wife beaters, judges and jurys
Long hair, no hair, everybody everywhere!

Chorus

Sure you can call it wrong, just can't pass judgement, not our call. Jesus told us to love everyone, that means the gays, murders, rapists, molestors and what not. We don't have to love the actions, we do have to love the people. I admit sometimes it's harder than I'm making it seem right now, I've turned my back on people whom I knew were doing wrong because I reacted to thier actions not them as a creation of God. Jesus didn't turn his back on Mary Magdalene or the man who was lowered through the roof of the house. It's not up to me to change someones mind on if they are doing right or wrong, it is up to me to be a testimony to everyone I came across. And I pray that's what I'm doing today, sometimes you wonder to yourself, Lord am I making things worse by saying these words? But I've also come to realize when I'm typing these words out they come out with such a flow and symmetry that I know it's not I that is typing. Wink

carl, carl, carl.

spin from sin.

only you, my man.

this IS a good topic all- cuz I hate the pimping aspect of all things holy..

and this friend of mine knocked down a bunch of flea market tables outside the church house once - er I mean twice, over the whole issue.

Love you dorf- and think you've stimulated a good conversation on it all, and I WILL be interested to see if (in this case) Mel will do something pro active toward the outcome of all this.
I have not seen the film, and feel somewhat compelled to, as I'm speaking about something I know nothing about.- only what I've read.

Mark- as far as God using Catholics- well, lets all quote Baalams burro here- aint that what we are supposed to do?

Maybe it's too late to share my two cents, but I would like to make a few comments (and no, I don't think I'm at liberty to say anything after saying the word, "but").

carl said not to get too hung up on the word "ministry," but I'd like to go one step further and say don't get too hung up on the word "Christian." Now don't get me wrong - we have to take that word very seriously. After all, it basically means to be "little Christs" or "imitating Christ." However, the phrase "Christian music" makes me uncomfortable. The phrase "Christian" anything would make me uncomfortable. Like dorf said, it's art. If I was to listen to music solely on the basis of whether it was Christian or not, then I wouldn't be listening to DA - I would be listening to empty praise & worship songs, which have the tendency to make me hostile rather than bring me to the place of worship. Like you said dorf, Metallica ministered to you. Sometimes I too find more in music that sounds a certain way, or awe-inspiring lyrics that weren't written by a "Christian artist" (but I'm not saying that I wouldn't be inspired in the same way if they were).

I spent 90 some dollars to rent a keyboard for the two songs we recorded on Sediment. Am I expecting to make any money back? No. Am I expecting to break even? No. Was it in my budget? No.

Mel spent millions of dollars on the movie. Was he expecting to make money back? He probably had some idea. Was he expecting to break even? Probably. Was it in his budget? Definitely.

Basically, we all have to prayerfully consider our place in life, and what it is we are called to do. I went in with a different mindset writing and recording those songs than Mel did creating this movie. But I didn't have millions of dollars to spend, either. Some of us have the financial and material support to do what it is they do, and some of us have exactly what we need and nothing more. That, I think, is the only difference.

A lot depends on what your personal definition of ministry
is. When you practically go broke creating an art with the intent
of reaching people with the message in your art, when you
possibly could forsake the message and make more money..
to me it is a 'ministry'. I think ministry is a position of serving
your fellow man, trying to reach them and feed them physically
emotionally, or spiritually even at your own sacrifice. DA has
done that over the years. A lot of 'Christian' bands have.

We have recieved emails from people to the websites and Terry
has as well from people thanking him for what he has allowed
God to say to them through his music. He could have quit
all this a long time ago, but he stays in because he believes
in the message he is getting out. It is reaching some people,
you might be surprised. If he quit worrying about the message
or reaching people and just tried to make money or art I would
say it would cease to be a 'ministry.'

I don't think calling what you do as a ministry is pompous if
you truly are trying to reach people with the Gospel. In fact
I believe all Christians are called to be 'ministers.' Not in the
pastoral sense but in the doing the work of God sense. Serving
and meeting the needs of your neighbor, sharing the Gospel,
that is ministering to people.

What Eric and I do for these guys we consider a ministry to them,
we are not in this for money. We sacrifce a LOT of our time and
money trying to make sure these guys can continue doing what
they do... reaching to and ministering to people through their art.
I don't say that for a pat on the back, but as an example. Its quite
an uphill battle most of the time, it's exhausting. There are tons
of other people that have sacrificed over the years to keep this
going. Tom Gulotta, The guys at Silent Planet, Jeffrey K, Dan Michaels
and Galaxy21, Derek Becker, anyone that promotes a show knows
what it means to sacrifice, anyone that has invested in the
production of any albums .... the list goes on and on. And all these
people don't come close to the time and money the band has put
in. And why? Not to just make art, but to reach people, speak to
them where they are, share Gods word, and hopefully minister to
them. Not everything put out is meant to reach people, Farm Beetles
is a joke....but 98% of the stuff is meant to 'say something' to you.

Sure there are those out there who claim to be 'ministries' who are
not. But that does not mean the legitimate ones are less legitimate.
It just means the legitimate ones have an even harder time because
the have to work against the damage done by the illegitimate ones.

Christians are called to minister to people and God will use them,
God will also at times use the unwitting non-believer to minister
to us. The first one is a ministry, the second one is not.
