to me it is a 'ministry'. I think ministry is a position of serving
your fellow man, trying to reach them and feed them physically
emotionally, or spiritually even at your own sacrifice. DA has
done that over the years. A lot of 'Christian' bands have.

We have recieved emails from people to the websites and Terry
has as well from people thanking him for what he has allowed
God to say to them through his music. He could have quit
all this a long time ago, but he stays in because he believes
in the message he is getting out. It is reaching some people,
you might be surprised. If he quit worrying about the message
or reaching people and just tried to make money or art I would
say it would cease to be a 'ministry.'

I don't think calling what you do as a ministry is pompous if
you truly are trying to reach people with the Gospel. In fact
I believe all Christians are called to be 'ministers.' Not in the
pastoral sense but in the doing the work of God sense. Serving
and meeting the needs of your neighbor, sharing the Gospel,
that is ministering to people.

What Eric and I do for these guys we consider a ministry to them,
we are not in this for money. We sacrifce a LOT of our time and
money trying to make sure these guys can continue doing what
they do... reaching to and ministering to people through their art.
I don't say that for a pat on the back, but as an example. Its quite
an uphill battle most of the time, it's exhausting. There are tons
of other people that have sacrificed over the years to keep this
going. Tom Gulotta, The guys at Silent Planet, Jeffrey K, Dan Michaels
and Galaxy21, Derek Becker, anyone that promotes a show knows
what it means to sacrifice, anyone that has invested in the
production of any albums .... the list goes on and on. And all these
people don't come close to the time and money the band has put
in. And why? Not to just make art, but to reach people, speak to
them where they are, share Gods word, and hopefully minister to
them. Not everything put out is meant to reach people, Farm Beetles
is a joke....but 98% of the stuff is meant to 'say something' to you.

Sure there are those out there who claim to be 'ministries' who are
not. But that does not mean the legitimate ones are less legitimate.
It just means the legitimate ones have an even harder time because
the have to work against the damage done by the illegitimate ones.

Christians are called to minister to people and God will use them,
God will also at times use the unwitting non-believer to minister
to us. The first one is a ministry, the second one is not.

OK, we're talking about the word "ministry" now. For the most part I know what you are saying and I agree with it. I still think you are completely missing my point. Forget the ministry word and go back and read my posts. It might make more sense.

Nobody Will

from the album "Mr. Buechner's Dream"
Music by Daniel Amos, Words by T.S. Taylor
©2001 Zoom Daddy/BMI

You'll see, we'll be
Fine everybody
If we climb, everybody
To the cross on the hill
"feed me, heal me" whines everybody
Blinds everybody
And nobody will

Chorus:
Motorboats on the red sea
Altar candles on the t.v.
We killed the prophets,
And we hung the sun
And finally got our
Kingdom come

We'll wake up, and make up
And cry everybody
Die everybody
At the cross on the hill
"astound me, crown me," whines everybody
Blinds everybody
So nobody will

Bridge:
We've got no taste for the new wine
Just want our faces on prime time
There was that time we fed the poor
(but we) just don't believe them anymore

A house and pool in the
Promise land
A slice of pie for the
Son of man
A little prayer, our ten percent
And a crocodile tear for any regret

Big Time / Big Deal

from the album "¡Alarma!"
Words and Music by Terry Taylor
©1981 Paragon Music Corp./ASCAP

Beam it on the satellite, send it through the T.V.
Get it on the play list, preach it to the masses

I want the big time, it's not for everyone
I want the long line, to tell them what I've done
Give me a bullhorn, I'll help Your kingdom come
I get all this, and heaven when I'm done

Why stop with the little things, wires cross the continents
The moment of conversion, on the cover of my album

I want the big time, it's not for everyone
I want the long line, to tell them what I've done
Give me a bullhorn, I'll help Your kingdom come
I get all this, and heaven when I'm done

Heard some talk about the big big big big big deal
Can't wait, moving on, can't wait, moving on
Lawyers talking 'bout the long long long long
long long long long contract
Five years, how long?, sign here, moving on

Send a tape to Carson, got a date in Vegas
Start a church in LA., billboard off the freeway

I want the big time, it's not for everyone
I want the long line, to tell them what I've done
Give me a bullhorn, I'll help Your kingdom come
I get all this, and heaven when I'm done
I want the big time, I want the long line
Give me a bullhorn, I get all this, and heaven when I'm done

All the Way to Heaven

from the album "Outdoor Elvis"
Words and Music by Camarillo Eddy
©1989 Broken Songs

bibles dressed in spandex pants
if you could get the girl to dance
she'll follow you all the way to heaven

and grab your heart through your sweating chest
clutch it to her longing breast
she'll go with you all the way to heaven

she's crying now
but tell me what she's crying for
she'll follow too
but tell me who she's following
she's longing
but tell me who she's longing for
she thinks of your image
as a stained glass window

bibles dressed in spandex pants
if you could get the girl to dance
she'll follow you all the way to heaven

she's crying now
but tell me what she's crying for
she'll follow too
but tell me who she's following
she's longing
but tell me who she's longing for
she thinks of your image
as a stained glass window

grab your heart through your sweating chest
clutch it to her longing breast
she'll go with you all the way to heaven

nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah, nah
she'll follow you all the way to heaven

OK, Dorf I was looking for the lyrics to a song on a Tooth & Nail Various Artists CD called Artcore Vol. 2. The song is by Sage and it is called Den Of Thieves. If I remember right, it is talking about exactly what you have said on this thread. The lyrics aren't in the booklet and I don't have time to transcribe them now. I couldn't find the lyrics on the web.

All this time I thought dorf was talking about selling Jesus for profit and here he was talking about really good music.

well what I mean is it's difficult for someone else to know
a persons motive, if they are selling Jesus for profit or if
they are a ministry. Just because money comes in does not mean
it's not a ministry. Who knows what that person intends to do
with the money... maybe give it to charities as Rich Mullins did.

We can sit back and say we know Mel's motives were just greed,
but only God knows.

My point is not to attack Mel as an individual. I'm attacking pop Christianity. If there is any one person who deserves credit for shaping my philosophy on the matter it would be Terry Scott Taylor (my hero Big Grin ). Look at the above lyrics and tell me if you agree or disagree. Then we'll be on the same page Tongue

I agree with you in principle, dorf. Having seen "The Passion" though, I have a hard time lumping it with pop Christianity.
