Well, the blog is called "The Greatest Christian Albums Of All Time", rather than "The Best...". Not to split hairs here, but I think semantically the word "greatest" implies a bit more in terms of cultural impact and establishment of purpose than does the word "best".

By comparison, look at any similar list of mainstream rock records - the aforementioned "Sgt. Pepper's" usually ranks near the top, and why? Because it was a revolutionary game-changer in a way "Abbey Road" (or even "Revolver") never was - it was the album that broke all the rules about what popular music and recording could be, and signalled a major sea change for the group itself. Yes, in retrospect the Beatles made better artistic statements before and since, but "Sgt. Pepper" stands as the most prominent defining moment both for the Beatles themselves, and for the greater culture. To argue that a different record (or artist) should have made the cut on purely artistic merits sort of misses part of the whole point.

And Ritchie, I highly recommend any of D&K's early work, up to and including their live double-disc "No Turning Back" - IMHO, those albums stand with the best CCM had to offer at the time (including what DA was doing back then).

I have owned (and probably still do own) several D&K albums. They, along with Petra, Whiteheart, Whitecross, etc, etc, etc, were staples when I was a kid. I'm just not a big fan of any of D&K's albums... early ones or late ones. Did they record some good songs? Sure. But how many really bad ones does one have to dig through to find them?

Maybe 20 years ago Sgt Pepper ranked in the top 2 of albums lists, but now in recent years there seems to be a trend of ranking Revolver or Abbey Road higher.

In terms of sales, according to my 100 topselling albums of the 60s, the top seller is The White Album. Go figure.

Otherwise "Greatest" or "Best" however you want to slice it, it is all opinion.

Does not matter if you are gauging quality or cultural impact, it's just opinion.

Still, makes for great discussion.

yep, i agree but sometimes greatest can also be the best, so that will depend on the person doing the list

I think a lot of times its a difference between personal opinion and public opinion. They are two different things. I can hold the opinion that DA is the greatest band ever, but I know that would only be my own personal taste and not be the same thing as mass public opinion which lists bands like the Beatles or Rolling Stones as the greatest. Personal opinion could be based on just what I like vs what I don't, but mass public opinion is based on things like popularity and cultural influence.

From this perspective, I could have a personal top ten albums that to me are ones that will always be in my play list. But if someone asked me what the top ten albums of all time for the world is, I know the list would be very different.

yep, the thing with public opinion is that the majority will vote for "the most famous". It will always go to the most popular! Lets take this list for example from RS magazine
http://www.rollingstone.com/news/story/5...ums_of_all_time
London calling from the Clash at # 8 and
Dark Side of the Moon from PF at #43
Pink floyd is not a popular band but their first spot on the list is 43. Pink Floyd's album is superior (no doubt about it). Pink Floyd is superior to the clash in every aspect!!!!This list doesnt have my respect, it just tells me that the ppl involve need some serious help lol.

Also I believe that the christian market shouldnt be combine with the secular market when it comes to greatest bands list, etc It just makes things more more more difficult than what they are. Big Grin
I cant compare the Beatles and DA. The beatles are the beatles, and DA is my favorite christian band.

Right - I'd just about wager that in every measurable sense, Pink Floyd has always been demonstrably more popular than the Clash...

At least Horrendous Disk is ahead of Keith Green. I do like eight of the top ten. It reminds me that I was very lucky to be growing up in the best time for Christian music. What ever happened to originality? What about music that isn't overwrought with fake emotion and cliched lyrics.

Over 30 years as a fan of DA. Wow.

If you read carefully my commentary I never compare pink floyd with the clash in popularity, I said PF is not a popular band and then I said that how could it be possible that one of the best "dark side of the moon" be at 43 while the clash album at 8. And now I add that DSOTM is better than many that made the top 20.

My first language is spanish so go easy on my ideas, sometimes I want to say so many things and I make a mess Big Grin

pink floyd in terms of popularity compare with a lot of bands and artist is less popular and that is because the music they make is psychedelic. Their album Division Bell received very poor reviews and "marooned" is a masterpiece of a song and if you come to think about it Pink floyd winning a grammy for an instrumental song surprises me

Tongue

Question huh??? Reply to this Post Post Reply with Quote Edit/Delete Posts Report Post to a Moderator       Go to the top of this page

Pink Floyd has sold over 200 Million albums worldwide.
Dark Side of the Moon spent 15 years in the Billboard 100.

Pink Floyd is one of the most popular bands ever, bad album reviews or not.

I dont agree here that pink floyd is one of the most popular bands. Rolling stones, the beatles, elvis, Bee Gees, even "M ichael J ackson" is more popular. One thing is that a person has heard of pink floyd and the other is that this person listens to pink floyd. Many people will know "another brick on the wall" but I bet you that many wont know there older songs. On the contrary who hasnt heard Elvis maybe a few!! And that is because not everybody listens to psychedelic music "pink floyd". It is definitely a more obscure type of music. For example Hendrix is very famous but his music isnt the typical and had a more of a hippie audience.

I am talking about album sales.
Worldwide they have sold 200 million records.
That makes as popular as the other bands you mentioned.

Just so were clear, I'm not taklking about what critics think or what your buddies think I am talking sales figures. Any band that can sell 200 Million records is very, very, huge, mega, superstar popular.

Plus you need to remember that Pink Floyd was not a "singles" band, they were an "Album" band.

Pegotico, just wondering where you're from. For some reason "Pegotico" sounds South American to me (Columbian maybe?).
