Live Bootleg '82 --- Wow! |
|
I picked up a still sealed cassette of the Live Bootleg '82 album on ebay, and WOW! What a show!
I love live albums...the energy usually tops the studio recording. But with a band like DA, who has such complex arrangements, I wondered how some of these songs would come off live. Shame on me for wondering! What a great performance!

Yeah it's pretty great!
I hope you did not spend more than ten bucks for it!

The recording quality on this is great. The guitars are so crisp.
A killer performance!

Well, I heard from a reliable source that although the surf suite is great and other songs good, the recording quality was too poor to get this album over the hump.

Live Bootleg 82 was recorded analogue multitrack by Bruce Brown in St Louis. The multitrack was digitally transfered to digital multitrack when the CD was produced. We have the master tapes, and have thought about putting out the whole show on CD, if there was interest. A few songs were dropped for the CD.
Ruckus on the other hand was a soundboard Cornerstone plugin recording, it would probably be a lot better if it was mastered at some point. Having been there I think the great thing about that show was the volume of material covered. It was a pretty big band as well.

Hey J&E;
Can a project of live recordings be made available without Labels getting involved and slowing it down and being legal?
You know like CDR's and moneys go to the Band. Simple packaging- nothing fancy, just the music.

Absolutely. The labels own the recording made for the album. Terry owns a lot of his own publishing which means he can release other recordings of the songs, such as live things, demos and alternate takes.
Thats how Live Bootleg 82 can have all those songs on it, or Ruckus or Preachers. The same with the Tribute album, they are different recordings. Daniel Amos even toyed with the idea of rerecording Horrendous Disc at one point, if they did they could release it.

Think- if CDR's were made available or for that matter downloadable MP3's of various live recordings you have, would be profitable.
I would pay for the zip files. If you hosted them.

Yeah we have been discussing that idea, even with Mike on the 77s site. Sort of like a button to buy a password that lets you into a section with MP3s and artwork for download. At least for some things that are not going to sell well enough to print thousands of them.
We also were trying to get Terry to do a basement tapes type of bootleg series the way Keaggy did for a while. Stuff that would sell to a point, without needing a lot of money put into them. We even bought Terry a 16 track recorder and microphones, thinking he could do demo requests and things. Maybe even get fan generated artwork picked by Terry.

Hmmm....
I've had Live Bootleg 82 in my car for the last few days, and I was struck my the quality of the sound...being that it was so old.
Maybe I just had it cranked so loud that I couldn't tell if it was just noise or clean production.
I don't find anything wrong with it...but what do I know, I'm just a fan.

This is totally something I would like to get. I'm kind of surprised that Terry doesn't do more of this kind of thing, or live solo like Mike does. I think his storytelling is excellent, and would like to see him do that solo in a live setting.
