It was obvious with some of the counterfeiters that have been shut down in recent years for example. Some of them were pretty large operations.. shelling out tons of counterfeit CDs on a regular basis. That does a lot of damage to the demand.. theres no question about it.

When the company that is being dealt with is aware of that kind of stuff, it makes it hard to work out a deal with them (or very expensive in some cases) because they're worried they're not going to get their money's worth out of it. So, the only option they see is to get it out of the artist themselves.

Yes, anything with large distribution. If it potentially reaches thousands of people - thats a very bad and damaging thing.

Have the idea of a "fan-investment-fund" been discussed ? Or is this something that is unthinkable for the band ?

Hmm... at this point, its probably too close to a preorder not to cause grief.

We almost just need more private investors that are willing to put up cash and see it through to the end no matter how long it takes. There are a few folks (ourselves included) that do that frequently.. but, its hard on the pocketbooks and credit cards. I don't blame anyone for not having the stomach for it.

i understand.

how much do a private investor usually put into a project ? (I guess that depends on what kind of project, and how many investors there are)

Yeah, exactly. If its a new album like the Eddies release, Buechners or the new 77s record... its usually a lot. I'd hate for any one person to cover that.

Reissues (or any release of old material) are easier.... but it also varies. Something that we have the rights for would most likely be doable with a couple of thousand only - assuming there isn't major work to be done on it. So, if there were a couple of people putting up cash, they're both looking at around a grand each. If it needs to be remastered (or has bonus tracks that need to be mastered), thats going to be another $1000 or so. Maybe less if we're lucky. If its something like Bootleg82 or Telethon of Love, we could probably work it out a little less expensively than many other things.

If its something we don't have the rights for... it gets a lot more expensive. The cost is set by the owner.. Some companies have asked for anywhere between $15,000-$25,000 or more just for licensing. With our arrangement with Solid Rock, we've thankfully avoided most of that cost. We're hoping to be able to arrange a similar deal with KMG.
