I think the record company made him do that, they were afraid people would think he went to bars and picked up chicks.

dennis is right, the rough draft of the liner notes
(before the record company made him change them)
were really a stretch.
Terry had "CCMitis" & had Bible verses with all the songs...
well, here is an example, I sure you can see why
the record company made Him change the liner notes...
Pie Hole
( Luke 10:40 )
But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.
She came to him and asked,
"Lord, don't you care that my sister has left me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me!"
from the album "Avocado Faultline"

Well, a lot of times stuff people write, whether it be
in liner notes, emails or posts comes across as frenchy.
frenchy and snarky. Even when it's not meant to.
If Terry, at the time, was getting inundated with people
questioning certain things.. it's possible it was written to
answer a flood of criticisms. All of us may get why Terry
writes certain kinds of songs, but that does not mean
the general market does.

Not sure it was the record company |
|
Wasn't it Dr. Shore's label that put that out? Silent Planet? I don't think he would have imposed upon Uncle Terry that way. I'd lean towards the Audiori opinion on this: The author wanted to "make one thing perrrrfectly clear!"

That's true. And even if he was feeling just a wee bit snarky at the time doesn't mean that's the way he feels all the time.
And Theo, I'm sure what dennis said was tongue-in-cheek.

Nah, I don't think anyone here knows what the heck is going on. I always thought the notes were funny, and so self evident that the only people who would benefit from such a narrative disclaimer would be those who believe that Randy Newman hates short people, Stephen Kings does the things he thinks about, or that Theo secretly misses his mullet.
I for one am for cussing like a sailor, a nice brandy, scotch, cognac, port, beer, wine, gin (hmmmmmmm gin) vodka, and pretty brunettes in a french maid outfit. Or a handsome man in an apron.
I also have a delightful fantasy with Berger and Richard Simmons sweating to DA's oldies ...
PS Is Tony any relation to Pauly?

Richard: "Okay Woggy, you go, okay twist a little lower now! That's it, three more, two, one ... break. Now jumping jacks, Berger, come on, get off the floor ... "
Berger: "Wha?... hgrfesgsrggssewsaert who's got my Michael Stipe poster?"

Yes that was the label Shore worked for at the time.
I heard an interview with Terry where he said he wrote the liner notes because of the record labels concern over "Pretend I'm Elvis."

I agree with what people are saying.. thats what I meant
when I said people come across that way when it's not
meant to be taken that way.
It most likely was written 'tongue in cheek' as a response to
possible or actual criticisms by people who don't 'get it'
either at the request of the label or not.
It seems like Terry sometimes feels it's goofy but necissary
to hold someone's hand and walk them through the meaning
of certain songs and why they are written.
I don't think it's at all directed at any of us, it's more directed at
the general Christian market who might not 'get' a song like
Pretend I'm Elvis or Pie Hole. We all know the types, the
guys that listen to the Tuxedo Clad Megastar and think
Free Drinks And A Dream is some sort of Bar song. It's amazing
but true, there are some pretty dense and shallow people
out there..and if they happen to be a Christian too, they
might be judgemental as well.

You mean Free Drinks isn't about Free Drinks? Man ... next thing you know someone will be telling me what The Shap of Air really's about.
