Yeah, that was just the priest's version of the story... after Rich died. The family and his close friends said the Priest was wrong. He was fascinated by the Catholic Church on some level, and spent a lot of time talking to the Priest... asking questions, etc. But he said on many occasions (including in interviews and on stage) that he could never be Catholic himself because there were things he had problems with.
The family & friends didn't necessarily act like they thought the Priest was intentionally being misleading... it sounded more like they thought it was more wishful thinking on his part.
