Yes. In general, DA ignites my brain cells, The Swirling Eddies tickle my funny bone, but the solo stuff rips my heart out.

I posted this elsewhere:
Angels Tuck You In was #1 song on the "hipper" of the 2 Christian radio stations in Tulsa, OK for 2 weeks in 1983 (the other station was the Imperials, Carmen, Sandi Patti station). Fell in love immediately and bought the cassette in the Oral Roberts University bookstore, where Doppelganger was #1. #2 was U2's WAR (It was, after all, a COLLEGE Christian bookstore). The irony--I always thought "I Didn't Build it for Me" had perhaps Oral Roberts in mind. There is a long hallway in the campus chapel with multiple portrait paintings of Oral and his family. These were the church icons. Anyway, I was hooked.
Vox Humana was released soon after and I didn't stop playing it for about a year. Saw DA at the State Theater in Minneapolis in 1984. Dance Stopped all night, all year!

Check out the opening riff of Bob Dylan's Things Have Changed. Sounds an awful lot like the opening to Dancing on Light from Terry's solo album Knowledge & Innocence released about 15 years earlier. I smell a lawsuit...

Ah, a couple of Eleanor it's Raining Nows. I love that one too. I bought Little Red Riding Hood at the Sonshine Festival in Wilmar, MN just before it was released to stores, I believe, and that song was my immediate favorite. (Bought Adam Again's DIG there too, by the way--which I loved as well. Great festival--if I recall, the Dogs, DA, Eddies, and Adam Again all played shows.)

I know, another "what is your favorite..." thread. But I have a little time on my hands this summer and I find this sort of thing fun--and I'm always interested to see what everyone's opinions are and we all agree there really is no best when it comes to DA/TST/Eddies and Dog's huge louvre and it's just entertaining, so---I was inspired by the recent favorite dog album thread and listened to their recorded output in chronological order. (Though I still need to get Lost Cabin. When I can afford it...). These 3 songs stuck out for some reason on this listen and were my 3 faves:
1. Last testament of Angus Shane (gorgeous. And Gene's voice--wow. His voice stopped time.)
2. Sweet Work of Love (had forgotten how much this one ROCKED! loved how they each took a verse)
3. In the Distance (Beautiful song. Builds great momentum. Reminded me of Angus Shane.)

The SOTH cover drew me, actually. I laughed when I saw it. Thought it was kind of a tongue-in-cheeky kinda thing. Yet nothing in the music pokes fun at that cover aesthetic. So that was surprising. But then I played it and I was actually mesmerized right off the bat--though it wasn't what I expected. Absolutely NOTHING about it attempted to succeed in a market place. Which, of course, struck me as very cool. Certainly there isn't a less commercial DA record, right? I imagine it must have sold less than any other DA record.

DA/TST/Eddies/Dogs have obviously gone through many musical stylings over the course of last 30 years. Which album blind-sided you the most? Threw you for a loop? A nasty curve? I rode with all of the changes in stride myself, but I gotta admit, when I first put SCENIC ROUTES into my car stereo after hurriedly ripping off the cellophane, my mouth was agape for more than a few spins. In light of DAs country roots, it shouldn't have surprised me so much perhaps. Of course, eventually I loved it.

Funny you should ask. I went to see DA at the State Theatre in Minneapolis is 1984 and hairsprayed my hair to point to the sky. And I'm ever so slightly ashamed to say I wore a white sport coat over a t-shirt. And penny loafers with no socks. At least it was a DA shirt--home made, with all of their song titles up to that point written on it. Boy, I musta looked dumb. Wish I had a picture, though.
