This reminds me of something that was posted to an old Michael Nesmith newsgroup decades ago:

Subject: Top 10 Rejected Nez Song Titles
Date: 19 Feb 1995 00:52:57 -0500

On my Awareness CD of Infinite Rider, the last track is mislabled as
"Horseface". Bearing this in mind and Nez's somewhat ocassionally obscure
song titles, I thought I'd submit:

Top Ten Rejected Michael Nesmith Song Titles

10. Blue Karaoke
9. Mr. Potato Head and a sackful of water mocassins with halitosis
8. Microsoft Bob
7. Tapioca Clams
6. Highway, Shmiway
5. (I wanna marry) Louisianna Larry
4. Lunch Becoming
3. Good Clean Pants
2. Monthly Weekly
And the number one rejected Nez song title:
1. Requited Love

This is all true! I swear!

I was browsing through this topic today (did this really all happen 9 years ago?!?! Shocked ), and got to reminiscing about DFBB and how much I loved it when it was released in 1987. One aspect of it that kept drawing me back time and again, but which doesn't really get a lot of comment, was the musical humor. Certainly, DA had indulged in manic high-concept wackiness on prior releases ('Autographs for the Sick' or 'Dance Stop!'), but there is nothing on DFBB which derives its humor primarily from anything lyrical or conceptual. Nevertheless, there are a whole lot of jokes on the record, in the musical arrangements and production touches.

David Edwards once made a comment in the liner notes to one of his albums about "how to tell a joke with a saxophone." There's a lot of that spirit deep in the grooves of DFBB. It offsets the seriousness of the lyrics nicely, I think. Cool

Anyway, just thought I'd throw that out there. Carry on.

Actually, at that time Keaggy & Stonehill were touring together, sharing between them a band of hired guns, of which Tim was one. I didn't catch the tour, but I remember the reports.

I have it as well. I'm pretty sure it plays at 45 rpm. I'd check, but my copy is 1,825 miles away.

if tickling is a lighthearted way to signify the momentary bond of two souls, and if the inability to tickle (due to abuse or fear or anger, etc) signifies the inability be so bonded... what's going to happen when we all show up in heaven?

A very intriguing question, and it brings to mind two things which I had never previously considered in the context of one another:

First, I have never enjoyed being tickled, that I can recall. I certainly didn't enjoy it when, well into my early teen years, my stepfather would wrestle me to the floor and forcibly tickle me in the abdomen until it actually hurt. Certainly no "bonding" ever occurred there. I'm sure I would still flinch if anyone ever made a move like they were going to try to tickle me.

On the other hand: Somewhere around 25 years ago, during a time in which I had been experiencing a bit of insecurity with regard to my relationship with and place in the Body of Christ, I visited a Vineyard home fellowship with a friend. During the main group prayer time, I sleepily drifted into an altered state of consciousness, during which, in my mind's eye, I saw myself ascending a vast white marble/pearlescent staircase, at the top of which was enthroned the bright glory of God the Father. At His right hand, of course, was seated our Lord Jesus, who, upon seeing me, joyously leapt from his throne and ran down the stairs to meet and embrace me. However, upon wrapping his arms around my torso, he began to vigorously tickle me until I could not control my laughter.

Not sure if there's any deep meaning to any of this. I still have personal negative feelings about tickling, but I'm sure I wouldn't mind it if Jesus was the one doing it...

Ah, I think I know what you're referring to: In the final iteration of the "refrain", where Terry is singing, "You're on display, yeah, He sees it all/He has totall recall", the dual background harmony vocal is "Recording artist", repeated 4 times at two bars per repetition until the Prophet finally pronounces, "Your bloody crime...". But there's also a third vocal line singing a counterpoint in the baritone register - I never could make that part out clearly except for the last word "stage". My incomplete personal interpretation went something like "blahblahblah your place upon stage", but I'm not even sure about the "your place upon" part.

I had forgotten about that low part. But, for sure, the upper harmonies are definitely "recording artist".

The album is 55 minutes long. With vinyl, generally speaking, it's difficult to go past the 45 minute mark without making sacrifices in sonic quality. (Or, to quote Metallica, we can do it but it would sound like s**t!)

In each instance, I for one will be happy to pony up for a bonus disc consisting of little more than Uncle Terry pontificating on each album's material, perhaps occasionally punctuated by acoustic solo renderings of the songs which hold the greatest meaning for him personally. I don't presume to speak for everyone here, but I'm sure I can get an 'amen' or two, yes?

It seems to be a recurring practice which goes all the way back to "Shotgun Angel", of devoting the opening track of an album to a musical and/or lyrical "thesis statement", before launching into the album proper. Certainly the first two Alarma Chronicles albums followed this motif.

When I was a young'un, my Dad owned a 45 of the Beatles' "And I Love Her": I recently was most gratified to learn that I wasn't the only one who initially thought the lyric for the middle-eight went, "I love my car, will never die".
