I can't speak for the band's decision on the cd wallet design used here, but having worked with other musicians / bands, I can tell you that digipaks are much more beloved for a few big reasons:
1) Aesthetically, they make the album much more of an art object (the way records were back in the day) compared to the "one size fits all" mentality of jewel cases, which are ugly, clunky, and brittle. You just can't compare the two from that point of view.
2) Environmentally, they a lot less wasteful. Just look at all that plastic you're not manufacturing and shipping all over the place.
3) Economically, they cost less to make. If you're an indie band paying for your manufacturing, you have to balance packaging with cost. Every time I've worked with a band on an album design, we always dream big at the start and then have to scale down when we do the math. The "cd wallet" design on Dig Here is a popular choice because it offers inside artwork and a booklet without any extra plastic and bulk. So you pay less per unit, get some nice real estate to design a nice package around, and can fit a ton of copies into a box, which cuts down on shipping charges.
It's true that the cd runs more of a risk of getting scratched, but if you're careful, you should be okay. It's a compromise, but unless you're a big time rock star, money is always a consideration!

Also, the link on the front page of this site that goes to a facebook page requires you to have a facebook account- it's not public. Which is maybe intentional, but if it isn't, I thought you should know (yes, some of us avoid facebook!)

I live in Queens, work in Manhattan (freelance work, so it's actually all over the place.) I love it! Lots of crazy people all over; very alive. I did catch the Lost Dogs 4 years ago, when I first moved here. They played at a local church and we had the opportunity to film them. Being new to the city, I had a lot of free time and cut together this little live video, which you guys might have already seen, but what the hell:

wow- so many replies. Thanks for the nod, Tim. I'll take mp3's if that's all that's available- thank you to whomever offered this- anything is appreciated. To answer the tech questions:
-Yes, I've tried this in multiple computers, cd players, dvd players. I, too, have salvaged cd's before by ripping and burning them- but when I rip this, it rips the "skipping" along with the track, so that the ripped files are just as bad, which is what leads me to believe it's not a scratch (a scratch would give a read error from the computer. This computer reads the disc just fine, warts and all. It just happens to have a lot of warts.)
-I have always stored my records & cd's in as cool, dry place as possible, but I do live in New York City, and it gets mighty humid in August around here. Still, it's not THAT humid that cd's should be oxidizing. The cd's are pretty well taken care of (not that we don't all have accidents.) As much as I care for what I own, it is, after all, just material goods and I'm not one to go overboard on protecting my stuff; in the end, we're all dust anyway (even our precious DA albums.) I think there was a Jack Chick comic along these lines, showing how material goods won't last. Ah, Jack Chick...
-I'm pretty tech savvy, but no expert on cd-media... but I have read/heard that cd's are nowhere near the archival quality that the manufacturers trumpet. I don't expect any of these cd's to be working still in 50 years... even if they technically are ok, I doubt we'll have any machines that still read them. But hey, that's another discussion.
-And finally, I personally prefer records to cd's- their sound quality is superior, even if they are less practical. They have a big, warm, sweet interior sound that digital hasn't reached (yet). But that's yet another discussion, so I'll shut up now.

Howdy, folks... my copy of the stunt records reiusse of DA's "Alarma!" has stopped working. I don't mean it's scratched or cracked... I mean the cd just skips like crazy, despite having no visual physical defects. It sits inside its little case most of the time, only taken out once in a while for a good listen. Audiophile friends of mine have warned me that this day would come... that "inferior quality" cd's would start to degrade enough that the data could not be accessed correctly... but I did not heed their warnings. Has anyone else had this problem? Is it just me or the actual batch of cd's? But more importantly, HOW CAN I GET MY MUSIC BACK? I miss these songs already. Is there
- a way to recover the lost data (i've tried multiple players, computers, etc. I've cleaned and polished...)
- any way a fellow fan can burn a copy (I can provide... photos? whatever... as proof of ownership if this is a legal issue)
any help is appreciated...
