  Molly is a Metaphor

At youth group bible study last night we were looking at "The problem of sin". As an example of how our attitude effect our relationship with God I explained to them "The cat metaphor"

A person loves his cat he wants to have the cat sit on his lap, rub up against him and give comfort in the way that only cats can. However cats being cats - the cat comes to the owner when he wants to be fed, when the cat wants attention or when the cat wants to play - it's all on the cats terms. The owner loves the cat but how does he feel when the cat treats him this way?

They guessed that we are the cat and God is the owner.

They took it further in that if the cat did come when the owner caled then it would be good for both - but if the cat had fleas then while both may want to be with the other the owner could not allow the cat near due to the fleas.

The fleas are our sins.

So to remove the fleas the cat can do nothing, the owner has to sacrifice some money to go and buy a flea killing treatment. The removal of the fleas allowing the relationship between the owner and the cat is all a gift from the owner - all the cat can do is receive it.

Thats the Jesus bit.

Then the owner puts a flea collar on the cat - fleas may hop on at times but the collar seals the cat against them and they die. As flea collars run out the owner has to empart with another collar.

The Holy Spirit.

At this point the metaphor starts to break down - but it was cool to see it grow. Terry was clever in picking this one up.
