how much difference does the new mastering make? I have the original - will the sound be noticeably better?

Posted by audiori on 10-16-2002 at12:19:

I think it seems to sound sort of wider, if that
makes sense.. but I have not compared the two.

It would mainly interest the people that don't have the album at all, I would think.

Not me - I'd like too but I'm gonna have to wait about a month on the credit card before picking up SR and the Pray single.

From Mike Roe on the 77s list:

>>> the reason to own this new version is that it has
been completely remastered, giving the overall sound
quality a warmer more 'analog' feel than the original,
which I always found a bit sterile and brittle.

If nothing else, they are fun to compare side by side.....and you can finally hear the bass!

(Gene Eugene is no doubt spinning like a lathe in his
grave, as he told me shortly before he died, and I
qoute, "No remastering as far as I'm concerned. I had
all the mastering done in L.A. by top guys. I don't
want some hack with a computer blah blah blah........"

Quite naturally, it was the first thing I ran out and
did. Please understand that mine is the difficult
position more than slightly analogous to the man who
received Franz Kafka's dying request to burn all his
manuscripts, but who nonetheless felt obliged to rush off
to the publisher at his first chance.

It's still not perfect, but I think it provides as much
of a whole new listening experience as can be possible
short of remixing. Doctor Love says check it out.
